start small, finish happy
Beginner cross stitch patterns
These are the beginner cross stitch patterns I'd hand a friend who has never threaded a needle. Each one is small, simple and genuinely finishable, with an honest Beginner label. That's 65 patterns, plus a few free ones to start you off.
- Full cross stitches only, no fractional stitches
- Small palettes, so fewer threads to juggle
- Bold shapes with very little confetti
- A large print chart in every download

How to choose your first cross stitch pattern
Pick something you'll love looking at, then check two numbers on the product page: the stitch count and the number of colors. Around 30 to 60 stitches across and under 10 colors is a happy first project. On 14-count aida, a 42-stitch design comes out about 3 inches wide, perfect for a little hoop. The fabric & size calculator does the math for you.
Brand new to all of it? My start here page and the cross stitch for beginners guide cover the very first stitch. Stitching with little ones? The kids' first stitches collection has big, bold shapes for small hands.

Beginner questions
What makes a cross stitch pattern good for beginners?
Full cross stitches only, a small palette (usually under 12 colors), bold shapes with very little confetti, and a size you can finish in a few evenings. Every pattern on this page is labelled Beginner for exactly those reasons.
What do I need to start?
A piece of 14-count aida, a size 24 tapestry needle, the DMC floss listed in the pattern, a small hoop and sharp scissors. My beginner supply list walks through each one.
Are these kits?
No, they are digital PDF patterns that you download right after checkout. Fabric and floss are not included, so you can pick your own colors and fabric.
Is there a free beginner pattern?
Yes! Join The Hearth Letter on the free patterns page and download every freebie, including a first-stitches heart made for brand-new stitchers.
Can I read the chart easily?
Every pattern includes a large print chart with bigger squares, plus color and black & white charts and a Pattern Keeper PDF. If charts are new to you, read how to read a cross stitch pattern.
